Any early game tips? (Or mid or late for that matter...)

I've played some of the scenarios and own several other AGEOD games. The only grand campaign I've finished is Birth of America 2. So I feel I know the UI okay but still probably miss important things.

Think of the relation of your theater commander and your armies.
Next look as to if your armies are in near proximity.
