What special powers or capabilities do Engineer and Pioneer units have?

Do they repair railways faster? Build things that I'm not aware of? Help in combat?

yes, booth should repair rr faster, while pioneers have pontoner ability + one more (cant recall now), engenirs give + 1 bonus to sieges (booth defending and atacking) and gives bonus to trenches (booth speedbuilding and defence).
