No matter how hard i try i can never see to intercept any merchant ships any tips?

Are you using ships or subs? What setting are you using? Orange intercept?
Where are you attacking?

Surface ships are pretty terrible in the shipping boxes when there are escorts for the merchies, but tech 2 subs and beyond are quite effective no matter what.
