Aircraft Upgrades

The tooltip under aircraft technology indicates @ level 2, older aircraft will be upgraded but not their elements...older elements will not be replaced until they are destroyed...what does this exactly mean? I have reached level 2 and it appears that my 1914 fighter squadrons are slowly being replaced by 1915 aircraft (according to the picture and stats)...?

Old aircraft will very gradually upgrade (at a rate of up to 4 sub-units per turn). Tool-tip is meant to indicate it's not automatic, but a gradual upgrade.

Would be good if this were the case for all upgrades (infantry, cavalry, artillery etc.). Most would involve changes of equipment (adding machine guns, trench mortars etc.) which did not happen overnight...

Aircraft do not upgrade, they fly until shot down. Their replacements are newer models. I love this change in ageod games! Of course it is easy for aircraft, as a depleted unit is still on the map with its airfield element. Artillery does not get that benefit...

I would also love if the upgrade was slower for all units, not just aricraft.

Then why does their picture change from 1914 fighters to 1915 fighters as well as their stats increasing? Upgrading is occurring, even for fighter units not engaged in combat. The tooltip seems contradictory to me...on the one hand it says that aircraft are being upgraded, on the other hand it says that the elements themselves are not changing???

Sub-units do upgrade, even if not shot down (i.e. replacements). They upgrade at a rate of 4 sub-units per turn.
