Creating a solid trench/frontline...

I am looking for some advice on creating a solid trench line, at least until the 1.01 patch makes it possible for any supporting units from different regions to retreat back to there original region if they lose a battle...

I have some ideas on this but I'm interested to see what others think :)

I generally place an army every three regions (two regions between them), two corps in the regions between the armies, and one corps in each region behind the front set to evade combat. Tighter fronts compress the armies and longer fronts see them placed at strategic locations. I put the GHQ where it can MSG to the most threatened regions. Obviously it takes time to get that kind of deployment, but it works as a general template.

Why set the corps behind the front to evade? I'd imagine one would want high patrol value behind the front.

Because then they don't MSG and create a gaping hole in my secondary line.

With the new rules coming in the next version, the units shall return to their original position, so you won't need to do that anymore, Merlin. Or so I understood.

I generally try to do the same. At present, though, the AI does not. The AI (at least as CP) tends to lump its units into giant uber-stacks or even multiple uber-stacks in the same province.

It doesn't really matter either way to me. The change would certainly be much more convenient, but I'm quite happy with the game mechanics as is. :)

All three AIs do this. Compared to other AGEOD games, it's aberrant behavior, and thus most likely a bug. I'll bet it's gone in 1.01.
