of all the Athena titles, I'm enjoying this one the most. I can see myself playing this one a hell of a lot. I have no idea if it is historical or what not, but I'm having fun. I am not getting as frustrated as I have with earlier titles. Still they were fun, but this one is keeping me more attentive.

This is what I mean. Look at this. I am pushing through in the Luxemburg area. I have Mainz besieged. I have them in the Hgilmer deathgrip.

Sorry. I'm probably posting too much. And I'm sure someone can look at that and say, "Hey, moron, you're messing up!" I hope I'm not. But, it is fun, to be honest.

I'm very glad to hear you are enjoying it! The trenches will start to slow things down in the west by the end of 1914, but that doesn't mean epic battles can't still occur here! In a PBEM I played during the beta, we had almost constant warfare in the West in 1915 while the Central Powers tried to take Poland from Russia, only a handful of regions were lost, but the cost in human life was horrendous (about 2 million on each side). And that was just in the West, the East was equally bloody, though quite a bit more territory changed hands!

The key to the later war is building medium and heavy artillery to fill out your Armies. Only the bigger artillery packs enough punch to effectively breach entrenchments. War Supply is the great limitation on how much artillery can be built though, so it takes time to build up the war machine!

The Germans are bloodying themselves on the Russians. March 1915 and they have lost about 400K men and the Russians a similar number just below 400K. I have lost about 60K. Most of that was in an ill-fated battle in the German area just above Switzerland name of region Mulhousen. Note to self: Even if you seem to out number 4 to 1, do not attack across a river into mountainous area where the army you are attacking is entrenched somewhat.

Indeed. Or in other words, 'Operation - stay the hell out of Switzerland.' ;)

Not quite Switzerland, but very very close. And it has the same mountains!! Yes, dumb dumb dumb. But I see a power of 280 or so and I have about 1400 and I think, "Oh, yeah, I can do this." and then I think another corps MTSG'ed and that army of mine took about 10 turns to make it back. At least they weren't completely eliminated, though.

I'm not sure if I've ever played a strategy game where an invasion through Switzerland made sense. Paradox, Slitherine, AGEOD, they all seem to know that a move through chocolate land would result in tears and bittersweet farewells. There's a reason why the Swiss have always made the best chocolate and watches. No one has ever been crazy enough to invade them and make them do it a different way.

But it's possible in TEAW, right? I might just give it a try... hey, what's the worst that could happen?

Yeah, apparently invading Switzerland wasn't such a good idea, after all. Went with the Rupprecht plan and headed into Swiss territory. By early 1915 my west and east fronts were collapsing. Oh, the invasion of Switzerland actually went pretty well, but it opened up so much room for French units to exploit it that I had to use almost my entire western front just to stabilize the sector. Russia pushed into Poland and eastern Germany and my Austrian forces had a hell of a time taking Serbia. Even with Ottomans coming in on my side, it was looking like another stalled WW1... not a good sign for the Central Powers.

Good stuff, really digging the warplan concept and use of multiple fronts. TEAW really keeps you thinking of the next few turns ahead. Definitely a good improvement in terms of the grand scale design.
