End of Turn crash, 1.06

Using the most current release I had a crash just when the turn finished
processing. When I reload I'm at the beginning of the previous turn. None
of my plots are there for movement. However, when I roll back 1 turn, all
the plots for movement are there. It's a weird error that others have reported
in the past, and that I've run across occasionally. Might be my messed up
old laptop, might not be.

Another write permission problem when saving files. Can be so many things, but this is definitively an hardware or a Windows problem and not an engine issue. Have you tried contacting
support@slitherine.co.uk? They can test with you a lot of possible falltraps.

Not yet, but I'll give it a try. I figured the fault was more with my dying laptop.

As you know, Pocus, I have been experiencing these crashes as well. I have fired off a dispatch to Slitherine. Will see what they say. Not considering the beta builds - where I expect to encounter issues - this official 1.06 crashes more than any other official build that I can recall. I am using the same computer, same Windows ... the only non-constant is the game version. It can go many turns without crashing or, it may crash or 3 turns successively. Usually, one restart fixes it for that turn, but at times it can take as many as 5 restarts to get a single turn to process. I am not sure, but it seems like a large-scale battle is usually involved in the turns that crash. I hope that someone can figure this out. Getting very frustrating to play, and I love this game. Soon, we'll be in Windows 10. THEN what happens? If I get a positive result from Slitherine, I will post it here.

Here is Slitherine's response:
"Open the game installation folder and delete a file named userpath.ini. Start a new game and check if the issue is persisting.
By deleting this file, the game will save/load the files (save games and game logs) in the main game installation folder instead of the default one which is the Windows Documents folder."
Guess I'll try that and see.

I have just about every versions of CW2 since 1.04 installed, including practically every RC public beta patch. Every installation has an userpath.ini file. Each and every one of them has size 0.

yes, the presence of the file is what the game seeks, there is nothing in the file.

That's a bit of a perverse way to use in ini file, but...

All I know is that I have played April - April -- 1 full year -- no crashes. Keeping my fingers crossed!

Lets all reflects about the philosophical significance of that. The file is empty, yet it provides informations.
Does holes exist, they are made of nothing.
etc.

It's like a bag full of dough nut holes; it still smells good, but it's not very filling
Anyway an ini file has the specific purpose of containing information... you know what I mean

You have to love a game that comes with Zen koans.

Actually I think this is quantum physics, where 'nothing' has characteristics which allow 'everything' to come into existence

Talk of quantum physics in a Civil War 2 forum? Is this where someone is supposed to make a bad pun about eigenstates and a grand unified theory of mathematics?
The .ini is both empty and filled with information until you open it.
Sorry, I'll hit myself on the way out...

This is how I feel after surviving the first two years of the Grand Campaign

No matter how crazy it may seem, removing the userpath.ini file from my game directory has - it seems - solved my turn processing crash issues. I am nearing 1864 in the April Grand Campaign with nary a crash. Having a good game to boot. With the same installation, before removing he file, I was having frequent crashes. This was with Windows 8.1. Try it, if you are having issues. You may like it!

Yes, that's not what I would expect, Richfed, but if it works for you, then this is nice.
