If I alt-tab over to do something else, then after some time when I go back to the game, usually by clicking on it on my task bar, I get a black screen but the mouse pointer is the recognizable brass pen. Nothing I click or type appears to have any effect. Eventually I have to kill the process, and when I load up again any moves I made since I last saved are lost.

I can alt-tab away and come back and all is OK as long as I do it relatively soon.

Is this a problem with full screen mode only? Would I avoid it in windowed mode?

This is because of screen saving triggering, which is always using active desktop or directX in Seven, and we have incompatibility issues with it. Sadly, we don't have the resources to dig into that. I humbly suggest you push up the timer before you get into sleep (your computer, not you ) or that you save and quit the game if you think you move out of your PC for a while.
I hope this won't detract you from enjoying the game though.

In the "game settings" I changed Display from "Standard (optimized)" to "Fullscreen", and so far I have not seen the problem, though I have not tested exhaustively.

spoke too soon, after I waited long enough the problem happened again.

I will just have to remember to save a lot. It is frustrating but oh well.
