Message box not being displayed?

I just picked game up completed tutorials and trying to play Shiloh 1862 and for some reason there is no white box on bottom that should be there displaying messages. Any idea?

The message box or ledger displays on demand and disappears during play. On the righthand bottom of your screen, you will see the boxes you click on to open different reports. Double click any one of them and you fully open the ledger.
