I've had battles where the numbers ALL seem to be in my favor and vice versa, but the opposing side wins. What am I missing here? How does the game determine a battle victor?

The victor in a battle is determined by battle points (BP). If you hold the ground, that's 5 BPs. If you retreat, you lose 5 BPs. One BP for each National Morale point gained or the opposite for each one lost. If you were routed, you lose another 5 BPs. Then the program checks who has the most BPs. So you can hold the ground and lose the battle if you had too many losses.
Now I would normally link to the Agewiki page that I copied this from to a personal file I wisely kept, except some wiener torched the wiki.

Thanks! There's a thread in the board's general discussions forum that the wiki could not be fixed.

Yes, I know.
Unfortunately not every page was saved in the WBM.

OK, so basically, did you hold or retreat, then check battle results for inflicts and losses to get an idea.
