National moral from battles

Is there any logic behind the NM gain or loss by battles?
In the East there was a defeat resulting in 6k losses costing me 3 NM.
In the West I just won a battle with slightly higher losses and dealing almost 8k casualties to the Rebs just to gain ZERO NM.

The difference between casualties plays a large role.

Were any whole units lost in the eastern battle? This may cause NM loss.

@Captain_Orso
Casualties in the West were about 11.5k Union vs 8k Rebel. But I lost a general, does that matter?
In the East it was 6k Union to 2.3k Rebel casualties.

Just as comparison I lost a region with a garrison inside a city of which 2 elements were killed and 2 more almost wiped out with about 3.7k casualties while the Rebels only suffered 830 casualties and that cost me 2NM, where I guess 1 comes alone from the fact that I lost a city.

@Gray Fox
Does not look like,but can I be sure? Battlescreen only shows 9 elements so how do I know if one was eliminated?

I think element loss is observed. Unit loss would be very ambivalent, because a unit could be a single militia unit or one of those massive 7 element VA units.

Firstly, it's on a per battle basis, not the casualties for the entire turn.

I think the battle engine summarizes a number of factors, some of which probably play a larger role than other. So if elements are lost, but overall casualties are pretty even, NM change might not trigger, or only a small change.

I also believe, even if no elements are lost, but the casualty difference between the two sides is very great in ration (1-2, 1-3, etc.) it might trigger NM change.

And, if casualties were pretty even, but one side lost a number of elements, NM change might also be triggered.

I don't think leader loss actually plays much of a role, but I'm not sure of that. Maybe depending on the leader's Political Influence value.

This is mostly from experience, so take it with a grain of salt.
