If a few militia elements, let’s say 3, are placed in a division or force of higher quality troops, will the militia units absorb any attrition loses first?

No, attrition (both cohesion and hits) is applied roughly evenly, but the impact of these equal losses to fighting ability is much higher on the militia because they have less of both to work with, so the losses move them closer to the thresholds at which they begin to suffer consequences than the same losses to a higher quality unit would. Those militia will be even more likely to become shaken or routed during combat than their peers, which can cascade to the rest of the unit.
