I have a friend that works there, but haven't been.

Ever been to the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier? Also a great museum and worth visiting. http://www.pamplinpark.org/national_museum.html

But if I had to recommend one museum to visit associated with the Civil War, it would be the Mariner's Museum in Newport News, VA aka the "home" of the Monitor. The Monitor exhibit/wing/museum is phenomenal. Great storytelling, great exhibits, great artifacts. It's the best museum I've ever experienced, and it's only one large chunk of a much larger museum. http://www.marinersmuseum.org/

And an "honorable" mention to the Old Courthouse Museum in Vicksburg, a facility where it is still and always will be 1866. An interesting place to visit for all the wrong reasons.
