Vanishing General

Fought a battle with Longstreet commanding his corps, the CSA won the battle however Longstreet has disappeared from the stack. Where has he gone or did he die?

I would guess that he died. You should be able to find a message telling you that he did die in combat. He could also have been injured and moved to a different location. There should be something in the combat messages if either of these happened.

He may have been wounded. Look at surrounding towns/cities and see if he's there.

Can not find him guess he must be dead? Bit sad as he is my favourite CSA commander.

Definately one of the features I wish they would add in the future would be a Leaders screen, showing you where they are and what they are in command of...and since we (or rather I) am on wishes, it also be great if they kept a track record of their performance or just a list of battles fought.

Try checking the ledger to see if Longstreet is there. :sherlock:

Yes, check the ledger first. If he's not there.... my condolences.

If he is, click on the faction flag in front of him to select his unit.

You most certainly should get a normal message in the Message Panel if he is wounded or killed.

Looked up the ledger he is not there, guess he is dead then but I definitely did not receive a message. Regards.

I have a different situation of 'disappearing' generals. I send a general over enemy territory and they get 'trapped.'
The situation is like this:
I have a general with the Army of Tennessee near Memphis and the New Orleans occupation forces need one more general. So I send the general from the Army of the Tennessee to New Orleans. I use the 'avoid combat' option.
The general disappears.
I can find the general on the ledger which takes me to some place, like Jackson, Mississippi, where the general can be found, but he is not available. He is somehow trapped in Jackson. He remains there until I manage to take Jackson many turns later.

It is odd to me, like he lost a battle and was wounded, but then is somehow frozen in a 'fourth dimension.'

Has this odd event happened to anyone else. I have had it happen three times as of this writing.

It's happened to me, sometimes when they are with troops. One trick I learned is to find them
in the ledger and click on the flag to take you to them, and they pop right up as usual. It's a
rare thing, so I haven't bothered reporting it.

Not yet, but that would make a fine update.

This is a known issue. It's a side affect of ... I don't know if I can say this ... of blinding all the generals Image That's so disgusting, I-I...

Sorry Image

Leaders used to be configured so that they could hardly be detected--especially in non-clear regions--but could detect quite well, which made them ideal scouts. But that is is totally a-historical. So to prevent them from being misused as scouts, their detection ratings were set to 0. This means that if you send a leader into an area deep in enemy territory where you have no loyalty and 0 detection from any nearby troops, then you can see nothing, not even Godzilla, not even...
Image

and not even your own leader, who cannot see either, and since you cannot see him he's not displayed on the map..

You still have full control over him though. If he were plotted to move through 'hidden' territory and come out the other side and just coincidentally was in the middle of the hidden territory at turn end, I believe still see his movement plot, but otherwise you just have to use the unit-ledger <F1> to find and select him and hope that you don't forget where you put him.

Doc, how do you lose a leader in a stack of troops?...

Does this only happen when you issue a move order to a general, or will it also happen if you strategically re-deploy them?

No stack, probably just one unit, and it might have been something like an army
or signals or balloon unit.

You can only use strategic redeployment from one railroad region you control to another railroad region you control. So, per definition, you cannot lose a leader like that.
