I've been looking at the CW II expansion but I would like to know what everyone thinks of it. I have just started playing not too long ago and have not played through one full campaign yet.

"There are also three Grand Campaigns spanning a wider timeframe and covering the entire front of the war." Matrix Games Website

How much does the grand campaign expand the timeframe compared to the grand campaign in the stock game? Does it start earlier and/or end later?

I haven't played it , but I believe that its just new scenarios, none of which are longer than the Full civil war campaign.

The others campaigns start later, so are nice if you don't want to always restart in 1861. You also get campaigns that deal with only one front. And then extra scenarios, if you want to experiment military operations without the full thing.

Cool, thanks for the info. I will probably pick it up after I actually get through a few full campaigns.

It is worth it, against AI it gives a more difficult game.

I just finished playing the 1862 West Campaign that ships with the game (inspired by the PBeM tourney, which I was not able to get a slot in) , and I must say I enjoyed it thoroughly and recommend it highly. 24 turns is a nice playable length and the scenario is very interesting with plenty of options for both sides.

Corps are available on the first turn, so the campaign consists primarily of big-stack battles. In an April campaign, you may be 10+ hours into the game before you can start to form Corps and get some experience with these types of battles. I feel much more comfortable using Corps after playing it, the West Campaign is a crash-course in using multiple big stacks.

Expansion Package Scenario/Campaign Changes

The expansion pack seems to have changed the length of play on three of the original CW2 selections as follows:

Bloody April (Shiloh 1862 Battle Scenario) went from 5 turns to 8 turns,
1862 Sibley's New Mexico Campaign went from 107 to 26 turns, and
1862 West (West Theater Scenario) went from 8 to 24 turns.

I'd like to hear from the designers how this came about, not that it poses any great inconvenience or problems.

Also, once the expansion package is loaded, as far as I can tell, you will not be able to access those three original formats.

Hi,

Same question as on Matrix it seems :)

These new durations are the correct ones.
