Indians in the West

There are certain Indian units out in the west that appear early in the game [full campaign] as neutral. Eventually, they disappear from the map. Why? And how can a player utilize them? Here is a screenshot of the ones in the off-map boxes. There are others. I cannot figure a strategy for employing them as the CSA.

I do not have a full answer, but when my Confederates were winning the war in the Far West these Indians signed an alliance with the CSA.

In 1.03. you will get regional decisions with witch you can buy their cooperation.

Those indians and the new map are just awesome.
Unfortunately having little knowledge of the far west I am totally lost. It's a different kind of war with different units and objectives. I guess the most important thing to do here is to employ the special units correctly and those few normal units to actually capture territory. Perhaps then the regional decisions will help with the control (loyalty should affect MC IIRC).
To the top of it... the area is huge, no idea of the side boxes.... I mean... despite the arrows that indicate where the units go I really need a real map now.

In earlier versions, the Indians starved to death (as they didn't control the territories, they didn't get any supply, and so just disappeared after a while due to no supply - that was supposed to be fixed).

I like the Far West scenario/theatre, but I have found the Indians a bit mystifying too. I have played the Sibley campaign a few times on both sides and the Indians were hostile to my side each time. Now I'm playing the West Theatre scenario and they are all neutral. Does anyone know what determines their allegiance at the start of these scenarios?

They are hostile in Sibley, and neutral in all others until changed by RGD or an event (like signin the Pimas treaty for example)

So in 1.02 there is currently nothing a player can do to bring Indians onside, either some event fires or they remain neutral?

Not sure how to get them onside, but I bet they will go hostile if you attack them... seems logical. I haven't tried it yet though.
In a related vein, I thought I read in one of these threads that you can eliminate Indian units by destroying their villages. Is this true? But how do you know which village(s) the particular Indian unit "belongs" to? I can't seem to be able to discern what a particular Indian tribe's "home" village is. Is there a way to find out? I have thought about going on a preemptive Indian village burning campaign before they can come on board against me.

I don't know if you can be quite so pro-active in the vein you describe in the second paragraph. IOW, I don't think Project Get the Indigenous Folks 'fore They Get You is supported by the code. I am under the impression that you have to wait before you can fight with them - the phrase "Not at War with your Nation" seems applicable (i. e., Neutral).
I have a Union game where the Lakota, I presume, took Ridgely, MN. I ignored it. Now I can't enter the Region, apparently.
As I've told my wife (from Minneapolis), "Between the occasional tornado and the godawful winter, don'cha think this is God's way of saying, 'Don't live here?' "
She doesn't mind my sense of humor.
