I just started I new game as the Union, would it be wise to combine the Army of Potomac's five divisions into the army itself or keep them separate ?

In my game, I combined them in the army, and had a second army with combined divisions.
I was able to seriously pound the south, and they surrendered in september 1862.
In the beginning, the south has large armies and if you don't concentrate your firepower, they will beat your smaller forces.

In CW 2 I don't know for sure but if battle mechanism hasn't changed from CW 1 in that point, then by all means, keep them in one stack. Chances are high, that only one division goes to battle, although other divisions are present in the same region, thus getting annihilated by a large enemy stack.

One you can forms corps, it's not necessary anymore to keep them together in the army stack.
If you keep the corps close to each other, they will march to the sound of the guns, they will help each other out and join the fight.

Good call, that's what I did. I like to have some space between richmond and washington in my games as the north.
In case of a big defeat, the Southern troops aren't immediately converging on Washington

Are you in 1861? Then I suppose you can't form corps then right?
