The Samnites

BOR is my first Ageod game and I'm really enjoying so far, I've just finished the first scenario (The Third Samnite War) with a minor victory and I have a couple of questions.

The scenario briefing told me I needed to beat the Samnites as soon as possible before their allies, mainly the Etruscans (I think) and Gauls join the war on the Samnites side. I destroyed Samnites armies and took all of their cities very early on in anticipation of a new front opening up in the north, however nothing happened. I eventually got a warning from the Greeks in the south but they did not declare war. The last 60 turn of the scenario consisted of just pressing "next turn" until time ran out, I then only got a minor victory despite holding all victory locations.

Was there some way I could have invaded either the Greeks or the coalition in the north? Is it just a random chance that one or the other will declare war on me? Is it impossible to get a major victory without going to war with them?

Yeah I noticed the same... when you play as the other side yourself you will notice that the Etruskans are locked until they are attacked (which the AI does usually immediately thanks to its immense stupidity) and if I recall correctly the Gauls can be called into the war by an option that the AI never seems to take. Although I might swap the 1st and 2nd Scenario here.. in both I have the feeling the AI doesn't take decisions that it could take which makes it really easy for the player.

I got a major victory as Rome. I had all the victory hexes except the most northern one. But I also destroyed all the Samnite armies south of that province, and conquered every Samnite province other that the most northern victory hex. I also used Pax Romana decision to make Bovianum, the Samnite capital, a loyal roman province. Tarantum declared war on me after I conquered all the Samnite provinces on the Tarentine border. I finally took Tarentum, and got notified that I had won a major victory the very next turn.

That's just it, I had all the victory locations (including the northermost one) but I still only got a minor victory! I'm assuming it's due to to me not defeating the Greeks but I didnt get the option to declare war on them.

I'm assuming it's like bob said above, the Samnite AI is not triggering/using a political decision to bring them into the war.

Unfortunately I beat the Samnites with a minor victory with relative ease because they attacked Rome itself and I was able to trigger the Dictator and the third Consular army it provided. With three consular armies, the annual Praetor appointment and no help from their allies, wiping the Samnites out was just a matter of time.

That said, BOR is great fun and I do not expect it to always be that easy.

Same thing going on here, I can't get at the last two victory cities in Sens Gallica because the crafty AI did not activate them for me. And this is about mid game, so I have 60 or so clicks of End Turn before I can get my Minor Victory consolation prize.

I got the feeling that if you beat the Samnites to quick, the Gallic AI refuses to enter the fray. Which is actually pretty "smart", considering the consequences.... Having saifd that, tha AI is indeed not very good at coordinating attacks p0n multiple fronts. Try playing against an human, by PBEM. It is a totally different game....

I think this is what's happened to me, I beat them within the first 25 turns, mainly because they triggered the event where I got the Dictator with 2 more legions. I think I'll try a few more scenarios before I try and take on a human player...
