Ranged units.

In other titles, especially ACW, ranged units were very important. I have not played this title enough to have an opinion so I though I'd ask those who have played more than me, especially the Beta players. How important is it to have a meaningful amount of ranged units?
Thanks for any opinions.

well, normal range of a Gladius is... 50–56 cm...

see, it goes that way:

the focus is discipline plus assault value. legions have the advantage of the "range" for the Pilum, means having offensive/defensive fire as well, while a simple Phalanx has not.
however, you cannot build many "ranged" units, thus the point gets neglect-able.

but the few in-game "ranged"-units have often for instance a skirmisher ability adding to the stack.
find them in game, use them one per each stack at least. some are obvious, some hidden in special regions which have to be seized, some will be at hand by event... depending on scenario and faction

Clearly, most of the time, assault losses will represent 90%+ of the losses in battle. In some occasions significant ranged fire can be achieved, like if you manage to have a lot of horse archers, slingers, archers, but this is rare. All legionaries can also fire their pilum, that will mostly soften up enemy units (cohesion loss).

The Skirmishers can rack up some "hearts" in the ranged phase but they seem to get hit hard in assault.

Perhaps their combat signature should be super small then.
