What exactly determines if you get a victory or defeat result after battle?

I'm playing Spartacus Revolt scenario. A couple of times I witnessed very strange battle outcomes. For example, here is a result of Roman attack on Metapontum. They managed to inflict severe casualties to Slaves and forced them to retreat out of province but game "decided" that this was Slave victory awarding them 1 NM!?
May someone explain is this a bug or there is some hidden factor(s) that determines whether a battle is a victory or defeat?

Yeah, that's quite strange. Victory is determined by summing up 3 factors, the side with the most point being the victor:
- Being alone with an non passive stack: 5 pts
- routing the enemy: 5 pts
- for each NM gained: 1 pt
So here I would say the Roman should have received 10 pts... I can use your saved game, do you know how to wrap it up for analysis? Current turn and backup1 in a zip. PM me... thanks!

Got the reverse...playing Spartacus, I gave the Romans a whopping. Me 20.000 men, they 14.000. They lost 9.000, I lost 3.500. They tried to retreat a few times, but did not manage it. Then Spartacus retreated (?). During the retreat he got hit 58 times (or something like that), wiping out his force. He still got a victory, and a 7 NM bonus. (And lost the game, he never recovered from that victory).

I repeated this battle five times. Each time Slaves suffered huge losses and retreated. Two times it resulted in Slave victory, two times it was draw, and only once Romans were victorious (although in that battle Romans suffered more losses and Slaves less compared to other four outcomes!).
Here is a screenshot of the last outcome:
@Pocus, saves are attached.

I'm having similar issues with this scenario. I assume it's because slaves are 'worthless' units compared to those invincible legionaries, losses of which cause horror to all Rome.

Not only that, in case of defenders in a city, battle result might ends up erroneous. This has been fixed in the first patch, 1.01.
