My advice keep the trains together with infantry and cavalry this type of army is used to protect your railway lines. as single units they will get killed by even militia on a bad day. its like mobile artillery on rails. As for the enemy forces getting stronger if you look at the replay of the previous turn using the replys function you might see that units come to strengthen them before they attack you or their supply situation has inproved(their are getting replacements for lost men) or they have recovered from being tired (cohesion). The Artifiicial intelligence moves a lot of things and you can see it well in replay mode.

Against AI you can use the trains independent from inf stacks to gain MC faster along the rail lines ( Tzaritzin,& some parts of Trans-Siberian railway etc.. )2-3 unit groups are sufficient. Trains also do a good job assaulting a city or hunting down green revolts. I think with the current exe if any unit(including trains) garrisoned in the city maintains "control" status unlike "uncontrolled" status previously.
