Breaking dow and merging units

Hi !

I have a question : is it possible to break down a units into its elements, and then merge those elements into different units ?

I explain : playing the whites, I noticed that some of my units are composed of two different elements : infantry and cavalery. I suspect this is not a good organization, though I may be wrong ! So I would like if I can break down those units to merge the elements as infantry-only and cavalery-only units ? I could not fin the answer in the manual.

no you can't break down units.

About what units are you talking exactly?

RuS has 5 organizational levels (the naming is rather inconsistent though):

1) Armies: can be broken down

2) Corps (which often are auto-named as armies, too): can be broken down.

3) Divisions (unfortunately the Red divisions are auto-named as corps): can be broken down (minus button). This is what you are most likely talking about.

4) Units (usually named as division, brigade or regiment): these cannot be broken down. Many consist of more then one element though. But, I am not aware of any single unit that would contain infantry and cavalry at the same time. Infantry divisions/brigades often contain an artillery element however.

5) Elements: are always part of a unit. You can buy them as replacements.

As concerns combining infantry and cavalry in one division (thrid organizational level), it makes sense to a certain degree: Having one element of cavalry in an infantry division improves the detection value of said division (lifting the FOW further). More tham one element is a waste however. As co ncerns the most effective division composition in RUS, nobody really seems to know.
I would argue for a diversified division:
- majority of elements should be infantry
- artillery (at least one per division, in big ones more (up to five or six))
- one cavalry element
- one tank (if available, otherwise armoured cars are a decent substitute)
- one tchanka (if available)

But enemy can break yours down :D
And, if I'm correct, badly depleted units can be combined if all remaining elements of one are missing in the other.

In the grand campaign a number of Don cossack units consist of 2 elements: 1 element of infantry and one element of cavalry. Other cossack untis have inf, cav and light artillery elements. I'm not sure why they are organised this way but there is no way to break them down, maybe an option for a future patch?

It's absolutely true.

In one of my games I was able to combine my heavily mauled Red division (single multi-element unit) which lacked some inf. elements with two separate single-element units (inf. regiments). The latter were absorbed by the division which became stronger by 2 inf. elements.

Also some of the bigger soviet divisions have a single cav element in them.

There is a trick that I have found is when Red units first unlocked(become available with event) they can be merged without the rules and they can disolve as in division command with minus icon. But after the next turn they can not be merged. So when consruction of units complete in the turn maybe same types of units can be merged using the trick. Siberian whites were merged as in normal rules.
