How can we know who the attacker and the defender are by looking at combat table?

At the bottom of the battle report there are 2 pairs of scales. Either side of these are a row of icons for each side in the battle. Each side is shown at the top of the battle report. The first icon on the left for the left hand side of the battle report tells whether they were attacking or defending, the first icon from the right for the right hand side of the battle report also tells whether that side was attacking or defending.

I still don't get this. I guess Ebbingord meant posture icons near scales, but both forces have offensive posture at this battle, so who is attacking?

both... Encounter battle, sort of.

It can also be even 'weirder', although realistic, where in each side, some stacks are on defence and some on offence. Depends of posture.
