I just finished my first campaign, the end date is August 1759. As soon as Wien falls, Austria sues for peace. A glorious day for Prussia

In general it was easy, i guess that's because Russians bad performance. Koenigsberg is still in Prussian hands. I have a question here. Whenever Russians had a breach, i attacked with my force in Koenigsberg with "Defend and retreat" posture. I always lost with less than 1000 men losses, but breach disappears so benefit was good. I did this all the time, Ruskies never reached to level 2 breach and every winter they left. Is this WAD or a bug? It is very easy to defend Koenighsberg with this method.

This game is very fun, i think i will start another campaign as Austria. And then i will look for PBEM. I want to thank Ageod for such a great game, and their endless support :coeurs:

I am glad you enjoyed this game. It is at the top of my list for most enjoyable game to play.

I have little experience with AI, so cannot tell you if the 'defend and retreat' tactic is normally successful in an AI game. If you are getting ready for PBEM (which you will love) the same outcome would not happen with a human opponent. They would have a very large force set to attack and your force would not relieve the siege, but instead get destroyed. Or, they would be set to defend and you would shift to attack mode and get destroyed.
However, there is an interesting quirk in the game which sometime allows an unactivated leader to take the defensive in this situation and it results in something very similar to what you describe.

Enjoy your Austrian and allied game.

Thanks Durk. In a PBEM game, what should be done about Koenigsberg? Should i abandon it as soon as possible?

Congratulations Metalist .
Attack and retreat ASAP posture is a valid tactic also in pbem to disrupt breach. But again casualties really depends of your force cohesion and force proficiency. It can be a disaster with low cohesion, low morale troops and retreat can still be problematic like in all-attack posture. You can disrupt& delay breach 1-2 turns but losing armies are much more dangerous. So I think it is WAD.

Keeping Koenigsberg is not really important versus AI play. Though it can delay Russian advance versus human player. I usually bring all my forces to Stettin to deal with Swedes first. And then send that army as a support force to either West or South against Austrians.
I suggest play with Prussians again. If you haven't already try with hard difficulty. And give some activation bonus to AI. Maybe Russians can march further.

Are you an aggressive player or a cautious player?
If aggressive, Baris's strategy is sound. Get the Swedes. The Russians will arrive, but it will take them time to capture the forts and build the depots.
If more defensive, hold Koenigsberg. A careless Russian player may provide you the opportunity for the sort of attack you describe.
One thing I love about AGEOD games is there is not pat or sure tactic. The range of outcomes are dependent upon so many factors.
I mostly play as Austrians. So my goal is to take Koenigsberg, which I will. You cannot stop this. So you need to decide if to use the troops for a better purpose as Baris suggests or to hang on as long as you can.
Incidentally, the Swedes are tough to take.

Did you play with hardened attrition on? If not, then try it again but with this option on.....
(All Ageod games should be played with this option selected IMHO.)

I don't know anything about hardened attrition but historical attrition is standard. I will play as Prussians again with harder settings. Thanks for suggestions.

May I ask something unrelated... why Frederick's unit avatar looks different in my game (v1.03a)?

Because that patch brings a new avatar for Frederick. I don't like it so after i made 1.03a i change it with vanilla Frederick avatar. I can upload it if you want to.

Yes, please do! :)
Unless the older one is kept somewhere in the Graphics folder so I can search it without reinstalling just to find it. It's the classic portrait associated with Frederick and I've always liked it a lot.

AFAIK you can't find it, i had to reinstall the game. First one is for Armies&Fleets folder, and second one is for Units folder. :)

Many thanks! :)
I wonder why they changed it mid game. This is indeed the classic image of Frederick the Great!

I liked the old avatar better, too. Edit: They changed it because someone who helped them patch it thought the newer avatar looked better.

Better than the classic, cover image of Frederick? Well, I guess this is indeed a matter of personal preference. I hope they change their mind in the future or at least reinsert the old image again in the folder for players to change it if they want.

There is another image of a younger Frederick too, btw. But nothing comes close to the original in my view!
