Hello,

What settings to use for:

Delayed Commitment
Foreign Entry
Historical Attrition
Activation Rule

The most important setting for PBEM is Activation rule. It should be set on either 2 or 3. Both favor Prussia (as it has in general commanders with better mobility stat) - the third one more - but represent the historical situation quite well and make the game interesting (as austria able to move freely and quickly will simply own Prussia with their supperior numbers).

Delayed commitment 1 works well as it makes the things a bit random but not too much.

Historical attrition i don't know I always leave it at standard attrition.

Foregin entry doesn't matter (IIRC it was supposed to work for nations like netherlands and ottomans but was never implemented).

Delayed Commitment- Long ( related to strategic rating of a leader that should somehow favour Prussians when selected)

Historical attrition- Yes (IMHO for a realistic game it should be always selected. It benefit Prussians. Crowded Austrian armies should need depot to get replacements, that way they will stop moving and Frederick will have more time to orginize.

Activation Rule- Med (With this option Aus Coalition with low Strategic 'not-activated' rating commanders will have movement penalty and combat penalty in foreign territory. That is sufficient. Otherwise if harsh rule selected then some Aus forces wont be able to move most of the time and that will give huge advantage to Prussia.
Note: Frederick is master of attack. He is fast and can deploy more men when attacking. Heinrick is master of defense. He can defeat French forces as a 1/3 ratio. Prussian player have NM advantage and must target armies and attack in the correct time. Aus player should target cities and carefull about NM. Austria needs time to deploy armies, Russia has some supply problems and must be played well.

Foreign entry- It would be excellent if Ottoman or Netherlands join the conflict by sending some troops.

I tend to side with Baris - hardly surprising as we PBEM together (read the AAR on the Paradox forum).

With the proposed settings, the game still advantage the Austrians, but not too much. With the toughest rule on activation, I believe the game is balanced but the game is also VERY frustrating for the Austrian player.

No activation rule is a complete balance killer. Don't do it.

Keep historical attrition, to avoid megastack, and do as you please for the other options.

Thanks for the setting advice.

Baris, you mention Russian supply problems, perhaps you can help me.

In one pbem game I am experiencing supply problems for Russia during the winter months of 1757-58. Koenigsburg is captured and there is a level 1 depot in Ragnit two regions west of the border depot. However, my units there are not getting any supply. I looked at the late Dec and early Jan turns and there seems to be a supply black hole somewhere. On average Rossya sent out 2200 supply each turn and the border depot 1200. Koenigsburg received 800 each turn but Ragnit got only 55 and for some reason Kurland got 1600 each turn but did not send any (It now has almost 3000 supply). Memel is receiving about 100 per turn. That leaves about 2000 supply unaccounted for over 2 turns.

I'm probably not understanding the supply rules very well, but if 800 supply is being pushed to Koenigsburg it has to go through Ragnit, so why is so little being deposited there when it is so desperately needed (10000 Russians just died there during early Jan and the rest will perish in late Jan). There were nice levels of supply there before winter, but now it's all gone and none is being dropped off there.

Thanks Narwhal,
I must accept Aus Coalition have a few more men to spare. :)

Moni Kerr, About Russian supply: I generally upgrade border depot by 1 level as supply coming from OMB can be inconsistent(I think supply pushes every 2 turns in winter). So it can be better to stockpile maximum supply in one push in case of winter. I generally build level 2 or 3 depot in Ragnit not to have a bottleneck for supply flowing to Koenigsburg. But the problem is all these operations need good amount of supply wagons. As supply wagons are expensive(especially Aus have less money) then building depots more then needed can result delay of Russian marching to Kolberg. There is long distance to Kolberg and marching path have marsh terrain.

Well heard by my Generals, Baris. Especially Heinrich von Prussen ;)

Baris,

I haven't upgraded the two depots, so I will try that in another game. What I'm seeing is supply going into and out of the Border depot in large amounts but very little going to Ragnit even though it is only 2 regions away and both depots are are on a navigable river.

Here is what I have recorded for supplies received/sent;

early Dec,
Koenig 439/389
Ragnit 152/99
Bdepot 1604/574

late Dec
Koenig 764/192
Ragnit 71/0
Bdepot 1374/1299

early Jan
Koenig 836/0
Ragnit 55/0
Bdepot 624/1136

late Jan
Koenig 0/0
Ragnit 74/0
Bdepot 0/500

I have the supply stocks numbers as well, but I don't know what they mean, for instance 0/351

Does it have anything to do with MC? All those connected regions are 100% MC under my control, but the Border depot and adjacent regions are marked as 100% Aus MC, while Ragnit and Koenigsburg and in between are marked as 100% Russian MC (they even have the Russian flag)

Moni, do you have patched to the last release? There were some supply bugs in the initial version. Player build supply depots didn't work, and the Russians were plain out of luck.

Yes, we are using the latest patch, 1.03 candidate 4.

As Bertram said there was a problem about depots receiving or sending supply before the patch. But it is not an issue now. Though snow can block supply passage for some regions with mountainous terrain surrounding even there are helpfull cities close by that can send supply, but it is wad. But by looking at the numbers of supply received or distributed in especially Ragnit, it seems very low. Border depot by itself should send enough supply to Ragnit . Ragnit should send or receive thousand supplies with level 2 depot constructed especially in fine weather. But in my games winter also werent a problem.
