If you zoom the map all the way out, go into the build menu (any of them), hold the shift key, and move the mouse you crash. I found this while looking at options for building colony buildings.

Yes, in this game the complex graphic can provide a crash for different reasons, and you have found a repeatable method to cause such. The good news is that avoiding this crash is also easy.

DirectX 9 code probably needs refactoring. Since its old, most new programmers will not be familiar with the code base; we are currently on DirectX 12.

Also the game won't be fixed since it is shelved.
