is there anything i can do to help it along, should i just attack Tuscany and Sicily?

and afor a bit of help - how do i upgrade my troops once advancements have been achieved

thanks for any help chaps

The bit that won't happen is an Austrian attack on Piedmont. The AI is too intelligent to enter a war it knows it will lose. So in that sense you need to force the pace a bit and there is no reason not to unify south of the Po by a series of invasions.

Dealing with Austria longer term is a matter of opportunism, if you have a look at my older AAR you'll see how I managed this vs the Austrian AI.

Upgrades are automatic, but will drain your manpower and resource pools. Best is to have a unit in green (passive) stance on a depot, they will upgrade first. Naval upgrades work for the first 3 levels (ie increasing the armour etc on sail ships), after that you into a process of scrap and rebuild (or send older ships to quieter sectors)
