Going for Alaska as the USA

Should I work for colonial penetration in Alaska or would it probably bring me into an early conflict against Russia? Is there a scripted event or diplomatic possibility of Seward's Folly? (For future reference; I'm not that far in the game yet).

Seward's Folly is an event that is possible after 1867.

Thanks. Do you happen to know if it requires a certain CP or what requirements before it is possible?

In my game it happened automatically. Not very useful colony though...

Thanks, but I have a terrible proclivity for at least gaining the historically accurate territory, only then can I go after alternative history.

Looks like all that is required is that you are not at war with Russia. Given that it's still not certain but highly likely. :)

Wrong...there are quite a few Gold discoveries events that will bring you large gold mines deposit (Nome region)

Good to know about the gold mines in Nome; guess it won't be a futile exercise in getting Alaska (if I can get the population up there way before statehood and oil finds are around!)

Yes, but I already have enough gold mines in CA, Colorado, and Washington. Plus, you will need a lot of investment to make the region populated enough to actually work those mines. Same with oil, you already have plenty of oil in PA, OH, and TX, and those regions are already populated.

Indeed, it's not really needed...but cannot be damaging either...and the population is provided by the "Gold rush" event

You can never have too much gold. The more your total population increases, as it will over time, the more luxury demand will go up.What seems like an ample supply at one point of the game can easily become a shortage later on. I have seen this happen with coal, steel, and other commodities that once seemed ample. And most of the world is not as blessed with gold as the US, so it is a great trade item when you do have enough. Just my opinion.
