Units recovering strength... or not

Sorry, but another stupid question
My Royal Marine Brigade took quite a mauling, and the 'manpower' indicator on the counter was completely white.
On looking on the detail, the two NATO counters depicting the marine regiments were both red, and both were showing to be 100/3200.
So pretty badly mauled.
The unit strength remains 43, however, and the cohesion has returned to 100%.
I left the unit in a fort for a few turns, but the manpower didn't recover. So I moved it back up to Alexandria, and set it to 'passive'. Still nothing.
Then I shipped it back to GB, and still nothing.
What am I doing wrong? I have loads of recruits / officers, so can't understand why this unit will not rebuild?

You probably need to recruit replacements. Look at the F3 screen, bottom right - the Replacement Pool. You recruit replacements there for each unit type - infantry, cavalry, etc. If you see red numbers over any of the unit counters, that means you need replacements for that type of unit. Mouse over the icons and it will tell you the cost per 1 replacement point.
Note that the size of each replacement is a bit obscure - i.e., how many points you need to "buy" to replace X losses in the field. My guess is you can replenish the losses in the one brigade in your example with just 1 or 2 points of replacements. So buy just a few until you see how far they go.
If I'm expecting serious fighting, I try to have 1 or 2 replacements points in each of my major unit types before the shooting starts.

reckon on 10 hits per replacement point (its random but this seems to work out ok). The more you have in the replacement pool the quicker units repair, especially if they are replacing lost elements, so mid/late game, really stock up on replacements, though this is harder to fund early on.
Also watch out you have the right range of replacements. If I recall, marines, like alpine troops, draw off the light infantry pool, not the main one.

Also, your replacements will get siphoned off when you get tech upgrades in order to retrain your forces with their new toys. I always try to keep ten percent of my available replacements recruited so that I don't experience sudden downturns in fighting capability whenever I discover a new rifle.

Thanks for this - and the other replies too.
Do Marines draw replacements from Line Infantry, or Elite Infantry? I think I had plenty of both of those, so was wondering if I needed specific Marine replacements available?

That I don't know. Sorry. Is there a separate replacement icon for Marines? If not, try Light Infantry.
