how do you change an AI nation to player controlled mid-game?

At the load game menu it looks like you can get a list of AI controlled nations and change to player controlled. Can you do this in mid- game, and if so, how? That list never appears when I press that icon down.

You can use the SwitchFaction console command to change from one player-controlled country to an AI-controlled country, but I don't know how to make it so that you will add a player-controlled country while not losing control of the country you have control of already.

Thanks, I would like to keep my original country but maybe switch control to me for a few AI controlled. The tool tip over the icon in the load game screen says" Click to see AI nation files (allows you to take control of AI country). That's what I would like to do but I'm can't seem to see the AI nation files.
