Does cavalry ever fight dismounted?

I often see horses quantified in the battle reports. I assumed that horses meant cavalrymen as opposed to infantry. But I saw a battle in which my side had only cavalry, but in the battle report the only participants it had were "men" and the only losses it had were expressed in terms of "men." This could be explained away if horses meant actual animals instead of cavalrymen, and that cavalry sometimes fight dismounted. Indeed, the cavalry units in this battle did have a limited amount of firepower, 5/6 or 6/7 in offensive/defensive fire and a range of 1 when I examined the individual elements, but the mouseover seen in the battle report screen says Offensive Fire 1, Defensive Fire 1.

Most (I think all) battle reports show a 1 for offensive and defensive fire, so that is not an indication of anything.

If this was from the last turn, I will send you the battle logs to examine when home, Jonathan. I happened to save them from this last turn.
