I have just started playing PoN as the USA and have noticed that the slaves don't seem to
be working in any industry, not even the cotton fields! So - why are they there?
Do they produce any commodity?

Slaves, which is a particular case of the servile social class (peasants in Tsarist Russia are serviles too) will be used for a given production structure only of there is a lack of workers or peasants... But they will in this case...
