permanent replacement need

Alright, so I'm still playing as Prussia. I sent an expeditionary corps to Dar el Salaam, to quell a rebellion there, and my men didn't do as well as I'd hoped. Anyway, in order to replace my losses, I've begun building replacement units, but while I'm told that line infantry replacements are distributed to units who need them, the guys in Dar el Salaam aren't receiving any.

Since I haven't been to war yet, I was surprised that anyone else needed replacements, so I looked in the replacement screen. It says that 39 line infantry hits need to be replaced, and it's been saying that for a couple of turns now, even though I've been building and distributing replacements every turn.

I looked in the military ledger, and sorted the units so that only units with less than 50% strength showed, and it turns out that the Danzig garrison is listed there, even though as far as I can tell, it is at full strength.

Does anyone have any idea what's going on?

They are probably going to your fortress units. Most garrison units start out with only an element or two but really the unit is only at full strength with four. To be sure browse around some of your garrisons, some of them should have none-named elements in them. I think units that are missing elements are given higher priority over those just shot up.

I guess that's probably it. Weird that they don't start at full strength, though.

To represent the historical OOB of the time... but you are free to put them back at 100% if you want... like you are doing... :)

Generally you get a message when a unit receives a new element (at least I did in the campaign when naval units received replacment elements and in one of the scenaiors for my land units). So check your messages, if your garrisons received elements you should have messages for that...

It's not the garrisson. Prussia starts with a depleted army and navy, but it doesn't show up in the replacement need screen (shows as 0). If you start a GC and build line and light infantry replacements, they will imediatly be used. I've spent almost 24 turns building replacements and have yet to be able to fill the Prussian army.

I just checked the starting situation. Prussia indeed has 8 Landwehr brigades lacking their light infantry element, so if you buy light infantry replacements those brigades are likely to eat them up first. Likewise Prussia has a lot of fortress infantry that lacks elements, so this explains the early use of infantry replacements. Also at least one division lacks a light artillery element...

Personally I'd have preferred if fortress infantry were a different type of infantry, drawing on different replacements. Then again, it's not entirely unrealistic to see garrison units gobble up replacements like that as they were often formed by the replacement army...

But generally speaking these are known issues with Ageod games...

Sometime we have to use the same unit definition for several things, as the database is already just too big to differentiate all cases.
