Intrinsic garrisons?

Playing USA.

Is there any way to tell if some on map outpost, fort, governor's mansion, etc. has a garrison?

It seems that usually they do and they mobilize whenever Indians show up.

However, when I built a depot in a region with a military outpost, the next turn the Indians marched right in and burned both to the ground. :(

I can't figure out if the garrision was never there, never mobilized, or got defeated.

The garrisons are auto generated in certain structures to take away some of the micro management - cities, fortresses etc. I don't know for sure but I don't think the military outpost is defined as one (definitely not depots) - There would be a battle report in the message list if there had been a battle.

I rechecked and the tooltip for building military outposts definitely states that they are built with a small garrison. (However, this is not the case for forts)

Furtherfore, when Indians attack them out west, you see messages about the garrisons being marshaled.

I wonder if building a depot where there is already an outpost removes the garrison?

No, the garrison is - for all practical effects - not on the map at all times. It only pops up when attacked, and is removed after combat.

The garrison is linked to the existence of the Outpost structure, so as long as this one exists, the garrison will be there...which in turn will help protect your otherwise defenceless depot, nice ? ;)

Actually, that's the exact situation that caused the post. I had added a depot to a region that already had a outpost and when the military unit that was there left the next turn the Indians moved into the region and destroyed both structures. No battles, no garrision mustered messages.

If it happens in the release version, I'll submit a bug report. :)

Yes, please do so, that should not occur...
