Big DPI fonts

In this thread: usefull for Windows XP (and even Win 7/8; edit: and 10)
. Smaller fonts for 144 and 120 DPI
. Bigger tutorial window for 144 DPI (not tried with 120)
. Smaller resolution for fullscreen: adapt Display.opt file. [ Edit: Sorry, the new forum lost the file, I'll make a new when I take the time... ]
Here is the file for
144 DPI fonts.
Maybe it could be tweaked further, the game looks better, but text still goes out from windows.
Here are the resolutions of the PoN wallpapers:
1024x768, 1280x800, 1280x1024, 1440x900, 1600x1200, 1680x1050, 1920x1200
For each, Ageod should tell what monitor size (96dpi) is good for their games.
Already, for AACW, RUS and PoN, I know 17" 1280x1024 is not good (120dpi), nor 21.5" 1920x1080 (144dpi).. Amadeus66 made the
120DPI fonts file.
Put the Fonts.ini file in \VGN\GameData folder (before, make a backup of 96dpi one).
. See my
144dpi window for tutorial

I see many downloads.
This file should only be usefull when you have customized your DPI setting in the general advanced display settings tab,
for you felt the texts (and other, and for general use of your pc, not only RUS or PON) on your screen were too small (you have a big resolution for a not so big monitor).
Or maybe you DL these fonts for you do need them, and AGE engine has a bad future for it will be soon old...

So we have to change the setting in our video card control panel? Does this work for Nvidia? I would love to make the font bigger.

. First, are your fonts okay in your everyday use of your computer? If so, you don't need my big dpi fonts file. If you find only PoN has small fonts, you'll need to bold or increase them in the (96dpi) file of the game. You'll have to make many tests, that's some long. EDIT: Better reduce the game resolution and still display fullscreen
. If PoN and all other software on your display show small fonts, try first to just increase fonts SIZE (but I think it won't increase PoN fonts), you can also increase the icons (see my picture for both).

. If that's still not good, THEN you will have to increase the DPI (and use my special fonts file). Increasing the DPI increases too icons size a little, so you could need to remove the past tick (if you clicked it). You can use both ways in same time, SIZE and DPI (exemple
Big fonts and 120 DPI).
. Then in addition you can try another feature: Reducing the game resolution and still displaying fullscreen:
http://www.ageod-forum.com/showthread.php?t=21691 Does this work for Nvidia?
For sure it does. That's not a special ATI feature, but a Window one here.

Thanks, it worked great. Like you said it made all of Windows bigger.

I would be pleased to know what is your monitor (size and resolution).
Maybe 120DPI fonts could have been better for it?
To make your 120DPI file, you must multiply the sizes by 0.8 in the original game fonts file, and round them to the upper. You may too need to bold many. (I had to bold all 144dpi fonts.)

My screen resolution is 1920x1080. I think I will try to make just the PoN fonts bigger. I like the game at the higher resolution but it is so hard to see the text. Maybe a certain Game Designer is working on this?

Salut ERISS,
I've followed your suggestions for my monitor, 17" 1280x1024.
First changing the windows font resolution to 120 DPI and then modifing the game
Font file itself according to your instructions and the result it's quite better indeed, so thank you !
Nevertheless the longer sentences ,in the tutorials for instance, now they go well out the right border of the
backward table window (don't know how to call it, I mean '
le tableau sur le quel s'affichent les textes').
Now is there a metod to modifing the size of it, making it slightly wider ?
I guess I will need some graphic software like Photoshop or the GIMP, which I have, but I don't know if those elements are moddable at all and if they are, where I can find instruction about modding them.
Regards

Good idea! It must be in
\VGN\Graphics\FrontEnd\Windows_and_Buttons folder,
GenericWin_800x600 file. (Edit: not the good one)
You could attach in your post your 120DPI PoN fonts file, and the files of the windows you should succeed in enlarging (yes Gimp should be a good tool).

I will give it a try and post it here then
Well I'm not exactly a graphist but just for the sake of playing around with it...

I'm sorry but it doesn't work,
Even when resizing the 3
GenericWin files that doesn't change the in-game dimension of them !
There should be some other place where theirs attributes are defined.
Anybody knows how to do it ?
Maybe Philippe & Philippe can help me here.
Anyway here is the 120 DPI Font I'm using.
All fonts are
bold and they are better suited for 1280x1024 resolution with 120 DPI setting in Windows properties.
PS: think about saving the original "Font" files somewhere else in your computer, ( I use a backup folder just for PON).

The frontend folder describe the windows used in the game. The old system uses .fte file, the newer one .dfm files.

Bonjour Philippe,

What is important is first to identify the file used by the particular window you want to mod... Once you identify it, you can alter it with a program and it should be ok in game.

qui indique que La fenêtre à modifier est TutorWindow1.png (dans \VGN\Graphics\FrontEnd\Tutor).

I made a new
TutorWindow1.png for 144DPI.
This is to be used with downsized fonts of my file from 1st post.

The resolution can too be downsized for a better reading,
using Display.opt file in \VGN\Settings folder.
Exemple for my 144DPI 1920x1080 screen:
'ScreenFrequency = Default' instead of '= 60'
can fix a bug preventing the good downsizing resolution
ScreenWidth = 1600
ScreenHeight = 900
ScreenDepth = Default
ScreenFrequency = Default
Cursor = Hardware
FullScreen = 0
Windowed = 1
Borderless = 1
BrigthnessLevel = 0
MapBrigthness = 0
SeeTutoFiles = 1
SeeAIFiles = 0
D3D9FullScreen = 1
RegionsBorders = 1
NoWinterBitmaps = 0

All this is quite technical to me and I don't understand what exactly should I do to get in-game bigger fonts ? If it impacts windows fonts, that's OK too.
The thread starts by saying "Mainly useful for Windows XP (Win 7 may include better dpi features)"
And in fact I do have windows 7 in English. But I don't understand the rest of the instructions. And it's not the question of the French language (I'm French BTW).
I don't recognize these screens on my computer except "parametres PPP personalises". But if I put it to 150% it completely changes my screen resolution and when I'm in the game, everything is huge, not just the font which BTW would be OK. But I now barely see France in whole on screen ! So I would like a way to increase the fonts but without changing my general windows (and in-game) resolution.
I would really appreciate a step-by-step idiot-proof explanation ;-) My poor tired eyes won't allow me to easily play with the default font, even with my current glasses and I'm very reluctant to get stronger glasses :-( ...
PS: how do you change the game resolution ? I haven't see any option to do so ...

Increasing dpi(ppp) does not touch resolution:

In the game main folder, run the helmet AGESettings .exe.
Maybe in 'Display' tab choose fullscreen,
and then choose your resolution in the list.
Maybe in \VGN\Settings folder, Display.opt file, you'll have to put ScreenFrequency on Default instead of =60,
to fix a bug preventing the good downsizing resolution.

First post: "Put the Fonts.ini file in \VGN\GameData folder
(before, make a backup of 96dpi one)."
You may have to rename the file in Fonts.ini for the game to using it.
