I haven't played many of ageod games because they seem to focus on war, and I prefer empire building, but this game has captured my interest.

First off, do any of your other games focus on empire building the way this game will?

Second, why 1850? Why not 1820, or some other arbitrary date. Just curious. As a Californian, I like playing the US though the gold rush.

Finally, how inevitable / scripted is the US Civil War, or any war, in this game?

The timeframe of 1815-1850 (from the end of the Napoleonic Wars to the start of VgN) was a different game in its premise. Basically, this timeframe was when one political power (reactionaries) dominated the politics of the world. It was relatively peaceful, shaken up primarily only in the late 1840s (european liberal revolutions, etc).

In 1850, you have the beginnings of the realization of nationalism, born out of the 1848 revolutions. VgN is a game of realizing this nationalism (or trying to quash it). Starting any sooner than 1850 will just serve to detract from the main idea, and add extra game time to an already long game for no real need. For any game, it is hard to decide on a starting point, as everything in history is influenced by something that happened earlier.

Most other AGEOD games are simulations of certain wars (Napoleonic Wars, American Civil War, Prussian Wars, Wars in Early North America, etc.).

Thanks for your reply, I've just noticed that there seems to be dearth of games set between Napoleon and the ACW.

Is it too soon to ask if there will be a demo? I'm downloading the WIA demo atm to check it out.

Most surelly yes, there will be a demo, just like with any other AGEOD game in the market.

True, however, from my understanding of the era, beyond the year 1848, there was not significant world-wide upheval during the 1815-1850 era. Indeed, there were individual acts of interest, but, for pretty much this time the Metternech System (sp) seemed to be functioning as designed (the major powers were very quiet during this period of time). The world of Crisis began in 1850, where the rules of European balance were tossed out the window, causing or were the result of nationalism, nation building, and empire building.

One other reason why I think it is left out, is why most war games leave out the pre-war era in WW1 and WW2 games. Players tend to use this time (before the big calamity happens) to unfairly prepare knowing what is going to happen in a few years. Starting off at or very near the time of upheval (in VgN this would be the Crimean War, which sets the tone of the era), allows for little time to prepare your nation. You are thrown into the situation, almost exactly at the time of interest, having to 'learn on the job'.

Is there any reason why netbsds iscsi-target has not been included into base?

My primary reason for asking is that I would really like to export some ZFS file-systems via iscsi. I was able to export zpools by using them as a target for iscsi-target, but that loses, at least some, of the gains from using ZFS.
