Hanging when coming back from screen saver

If I get up and leave my computer, it goes to screen saver. When I come back and wiggle the mouse, I have it set up to demand a password. When I put the password in, it gives me the normal desktop and will not switch back to WWI. In the Task Manager I can see that the WWI.exe resource is consistently using 50% of system resources so it is doing something but it won't let me back in.
I'm running Win XP SP3 fully updated. Processor is a Core2 Duo with 1 GB of RAM. Graphics adapter is a NVIDIA GeForce 7300SE/7200 GS.
Anything I can do about this other than disable the screen saver? (I'm trying to avoid having my kids come in and use the computer without permission.)
