Who suffer frequent crashes?

Hi all,

if you are experiencing very frequent crashes, please report on this thread what follows:

a) if it happens only if sounds are enabled (so try WW1 Configurator > disable sound)
b) if it happens during "AI is thinking..." job

I'm fixing some key problems, so I can give you soon a zipped WW1.exe file to test. I hope this will remove the nasty frequent crashes on your PCs.

Thanks,
Calvinus.

Well, I do not have frequent crashes as in again and again reproducible (I would have reported those), but e.g. in the first redeployment phase I had once a crash while the AI was thinking, once when I tried to drag a Corps from Constantinopel to the georgian front (which is apparently not possible, btw) and there was some other crash I just can't remember
But each time when I restarted and tried the same action I did not get a crash...
As the crashes were not reproducible I did not test them with sound off.

Nobody wants to test the fix proposal?

Yes i am having crashes every game now. I didn't see any playing the small scenarios but am now playing the grand campaign and a month into it i get the crash.
I have the sound on music off. So i will turn off the sound now.
These crashes have been happening while the game is thinking/busy.
So i'll try this patch/fix.

PM sent to Sean E with the url pointing to the zip + email.

I strongly suggest you also to read carefully the "Tech tip" thread... 06 Maestro has found something very very interesting! ;)

I have a repeatable CTD on the 2 player GC as the allies. CTD happened after a siege operation. Sound/Music were off. Was using vers 1.04. D/L 1.04b and repeated turn with same CTD. Sound/Music were on as apparently the patch reset them.

I do not know if this is an example of what you are looking for?

Yes read the 'Tech Tip', that was already set at application controlled.
But i have been playing with sound off and no CTDs so far.
Will do some more testing.

Calvinus:

Sent you a private message with my email for testing fixes. Maestro's tip did not work for me. Will try any crash fixes. Can't get past beginning of second turn in grand campaign. Each crash appears to be different. I can (mostly) play the smaller scenarios to completion.

I current have the same problem. The game works fine in the scenarios, but I cannot get past the Early August turn in the Grand Campaign - it always crashes.

It can happen almost anytime, but it always happens when the AI is thinking (normally the political/diplomatic one, though I can't say it is always that one).

Okay, with the file Calvinus sent me, I managed to reach the August 1914 turn for the first time...

Seems good so far. I'm going to restart the game tomorrow and warn if I manage to reach August 1914 again.

The game consistently crashes on my system. I have the music "off", but really can't seem to see a consistent factor so far in the cause.

Likewise. Consistent crashing playing 1.04b with sound off.

yeh, unfortunately, I have to account myself to the ones who also experience very frequent crashes. Thing is, it doesn't happen at specific times but seems to be random. What I mean is that it sometimes crashes during the AI thinking phases, sometimes it just crashes after the thinking phases are done and the units start moving, sometimes it just crashes for the sake of crashing.... :bonk:

Well I had my sound on too.

With 1.0.4c I removed all rare crashes due to memory leaks. I tested the game the whole day without any crash, several hours of gameplay. (Just a note: 1.0.4b and previous versions caused CTDs anyway very very rarely on this PC :bonk :) .

Today I will do the same tests on the poor 512MB laptop.

I will keep you posted. In the meanwhile, we will probably publish the new full beta-patch 1.0.4c even today.

Using 1.04b, GC as Germany,in the first redeployment phase I consistently crash while the AI is thinking after the 2nd diplomat phase.

Yesterday evening I sent a preview of the 1.0.4c patch to:

  • Sean E, who had several problems in unzipping the files :D
  • Martim Silva, who has reported good results
  • Johnnie, yet no report
  • Pluskat, yet no report

Philippe will soon publish a new beta-patch 1.0.4c, so that all you voulteers will be able to download and apply it very easily (unless Vista decides differently! :D )

We have agreed Wednesday 26th Nov as a deadline for the official release of this patch.

Thanks,
Calvinus.

Calvinus,

I just tried the new beta patch 1.04c and I just got another seemingly random CTD. This was after I had conducted a siege and the resolution went all fine until the reinforcement phase began where I just got the CTD message and need to quit the game.

Any ideas why that could be...? Again I had my sound on...could that be the case?

Yes, sounds 'on' could be the cause...

the MP3 playback library uses one thread for each sound/music in playback.
So there's a risk this damned library causes a crashing access to RAM when releasing memory once a sound/music has finished playing!

The problem is that all MP3 libs I found on Internet have a similar approach! :bonk: :bonk: :bonk:

There's still something mysterious in multi-threads in the game that makes it not compatible with some computers!
I will contact soon a developer from Matrix who experienced the same problems with other games.

NCP music files are in mp3 format.

I did not know there were several mp3 libraries. Which one is used for NCP and for WW1?

NCP is written in Delphi, WW1 in C++ :(

Oh, I see, I know nothing about that :neener: , but here it is said the following

The simplest way to play mp3 files in your C++ projects.
Just 3 lines of C++ code and you are playing mp3 file.

Calvinus,

Just had another CTD..... in the Capoletta scenario. The CTD happened right after I had finished my first battle using the Grand Offensive tactics. The battle itself went fine, just after victory it crashed.

I had sounds turned off this time.

Ok, I will try to reproduce asap.
