See my thread below for my attempts to play head-to-head vs myself. It works, but the machines desynchronise too often. Basically you need to save very frequently and move (email) the .SAV game from the server to the client machine to reload when that happens. But it works and it's hugely enjoyable. I've never tried vs another human, either like this or by PBEM. As I understand the PBEM mode semi automates the tactical aspects of the battles with an AI assistant, which sort of detracts from the tactical aspects of the game. Still, it's better than nothing.
