Newbie Questions - HQ's?

I am totally confused as to the definiation of GHQ's, Main Armies and HQ's.
The rules state that you can only have 1 Main Army per side per front - with a capacity of 12 Corps.
Does this mean a max of 2 HQ's per front? (seems a little light for WW1)?
Were then does the GHQ come in to play?
Thanks

You can have many armies on the same front, but only one "main" army.
In the army by army mode the main army must move/fight first. You may change which army is the main army, but there can be only one at any given time on each front.

Does this work the same for Wego?
Do I have to designate a Main Army each turn? What are the advatanges or repercussions of such?
Thanks

Main armies are "designated" only once, not every turn of play. So you will be asked to "designate" the main army only when you want to change it, provided each scenario has the main armies already set by default.
Activation (for movement) of main armies is another concept. This is requested only in Army-by-army activation mode, not in WEGO.

What exactly is the connotation of the main army activation?
What advantages does it give - or disadvantages?

If you play in Army-by-army activation mode, the Main armies must be the first ones to be activated on each front.

The main army is (or is to be) the most powerful one on the front. In fact, main armies can contain up to 12 corps (as compared to the 7 corps limit of normal armies [8 corps for Germany]). The main army is the "edge" of your forces, also in Trench warfare when you use the main army for the Grand Offensives, because you are so allowed to commit the most number of forces.

Each side (Central Powers / Entente)
must have
one main army for
each one Front. Every scenario has a setup main armies set, of course, that you can modify.

Great response - thanks!
So a Main Army basically is utlized when you need to get more units in to action in a cordinated fashion; Example, for a Grand Offensive.
What if I just use the Wego method?
Thanks

Some additional questions - as it is all becoming clear now.
1. How do I select a Main Army in the WEGO method?
2. What is the difference between an HQ's Command Radius and Intervention Radius?
I understand that Intervention Radius is the range from a combat hex that the HQ must be to commit reserves for a breakthrough AND also the range a detachment can be from an HQ unit?
Can a detachment be 5 hexes away, thus in Command radius?
3. If I am using the AI Battle advisor will it automatically begin a siege?
4. How do I build a fort or trench manually?
Tahnks for your time and advise.

WEGO mode has no army activation: you plan moves for all armies and execute them all together.

I don't understand the question. Main armies can be changed (button).

Yes, intervention radius is used for reserves commitment. Command range is used for stacks commands. Stacks out of command move slower or even do not move (commaind check failure).
Leeds wrote:Can a detachment be 5 hexes away, thus in Command radius?
It depends on the HQ command range.
Leeds wrote:3. If I am using the AI Battle advisor will it automatically begin a siege?
Sieges start anyway when conditions are respected. AI Siege advisor simply takes decision on behalf of you, when you are in the Siege window.
Leeds wrote:4. How do I build a fort or trench manually?
Fort are not built manually. They are given by scenario setup. No way to build fortification in this game.
Trench level is increased by the adoption some key technological advancements (flamethrowers, land mines, land mortars,...) when you enter the Firepower doctrine.
