In my battles I am trying to D&D them, into the front line slot for them but I can't. Is this because they have not been tested yet? If so, how do you test them. The manual doesn't really help with this.

Tanks are support units. Support units can be used only when you have introduced the "Infiltration" combat doctrine. You surely still never tested the "Infiltration".

This applies to the stormtroopers as well, right? So its just a researchable doctrine or do we need to do something special? The one on the stormtroopers is a bit wierd...

But does one get to infiltration doctrine? Are there specific technologies one has to research to get it? (like in Firepower doctrine one needs to research the trench mortars).

Doctrine are gaine through experimentation via Grand Offensives...so you must do them in order to "try" the doctrine, and then you can use it later on....plus of course some specific techs are required, to equip your troops and units...
