Major Offensives

I'm trying to figure this out from the board game rules. If I have it right, you can plan and launch one major offensive in a sector in each theater once a year. Each major offensive can have two secondary battles attached to it.
So are these the only battles you fight all year, or are there smaller skirmished along the way? And what happens if you plan a major offensive for, say, Aug. '17, and for some reason none of your armies are in striking distance of that hex when the date comes around?
As important as the patch is, we need the proper manual as soon as possible.

In the computer game, we lifted the limit of 2 secondary battles...there is still one Major Grand Offensive per front each year, plus as many secondary battles as you wish

What's the point/advantages of Major offensives vs regular battles ? I didn't see anything noticeable.

For the second question, from the gamefiles:
Click here to stop or abandon the Main Offensive currently in course. Beware that if you will stop / abandon the offensive while it has yet not achieved successful results, this will cause a major National Morale loss to your country.

Grand Offensives use a difference combat resolution table, and you get to try nifty tactics with artillery or shock troops.
