How do I know whether my fleet has achieved the proper blockading points for a port? I've tried everything, and I don't see an obvious answer to this.

You will see a symbol near the harbour when you have enough ships to blockade it. If you hold your mouse over the sea area to be blockaded it will tell you how many ships you need.
If you hold your mouse over the harbour to be blockaded it will tell you which sea areas you will need to blockade. Sometimes it is more than one.

If you are besieging a decent sized army in a fort then assaulting the fort is an expensive option. If there is a harbour present then you are not going to starve them out unless you blockade the harbour aswell. Besiege and blockade will force the enemy to try and flee or they will wither away inside the structure after 5 or 6 turns.

Hi!
You need 12 combat ship element (transports don't do the trick) plus six more if the port you wanna blockade has a fort to blockade as sea zone.
Do you have that many combat ships as the Americans on 1776??
It's possible than on the next patch the blockading numbers will be lowed somewhat to be on par with the ones on AACW (8+4 ships)
Lodilefty is looking into it.
