Can anyone recommend some good books (novels, not history books), movies (not The Patriot, please ) and possibly documentaries on this period?

I might break out a history book or two on the subject later on, but at the moment I'm up to my neck in history books due to my studies, and I just want some light reading on the side.

About films, "The last Mohican" is an excellent adventure film with French and Indian Wars setting
But surely you have already seen it, don't you?

The Patriot is awful IMHO. About the American revolution, the film "Revolution", is not very good, but much better than The Patriot for what i recall (long time since last time i saw it). At least you have Al Pacino and Nastasha Kinski in there
Another oldie but good film is Drums along the Mohawk. Is a 1940s film by John Ford with Henry Fonda.
Not among the best Ford films but quite good.

Novels... i only know "The Adventures of Sargent Lamb" By Robert Graves. The adventures of a British soldier on the American Revolution. Quite nice. In Spain was published in two books. Not sure in other markets.

The PBS series "The War That Made America" was excellent.
4 hours long.

This is old but good. I enjoyed The King's Rangers by John Brick. It's about the war in upstate NY as seen from the loyalist viewpoint.

I would recommend Wilderness Empire by Allan Eckert.It covers French and Indian War.Though not a novel,it is history written in a narrative style and very much feels like a novel.For the revolution and by the same author try Wilderness War.Both are great reads and not too hard on the head.Once I started reading them,couldn't put them down.They both have a you are there feel.

I read an excellent book on Arnold's invasion of Canada. Don't remember the name but someone should help. t

Thanks for all the suggestions, everyone. I guess I'll see if I can get a hold of Drums along the Mohawk. I vaguely remember having seen Revolution (I even think I used to have a video tape with it) and as I recall it wasn't very good. I might give Wilderness War and The King's rangers a try as well, both sound pretty interesting.

If I can find it on dvd anywhere I'd like to try The War That Made America as well. On the subject of documentaries, has anyone seen Liberty! The American Revolution, also by PBS?

The John Adams miniseries was good. Although it lost a little steam after he left office.

I read some pages of 'Rebels & Redcoats', it's not bad, deals with operational stuff (not just scholarly analysis of the causes and geopolitical aspects as other novels). And it's rather Brit friendly, which is refreshing after all the american propaganda.

for books try: 1776 a great, great book about the first year of the american revolution...
movie: 1776 the trenton campaign, another great movie. george washington must deal with the incapacity or treason of charles lee and the motivation of the army in this perilous year.

You might want to try some of the Kenneth Roberts novels, such as North by Northwest, Arundel, etc. Since these were originally published in the 20s & 30s, they sometimes can be a little difficult to find.

That would be Arundel, IIRC.
