2D or 3D

I would be very interested to know which players are using - traditional 2D units or the new 3D ones.

Apart from the aesthetics, are people finding the 3D ones advantageous?

2D!

I don't really understand the current obsession in the strategy business with "3D" at all, be it maps or sprites.

Also, in NCP, the 2D units display provides more information than those odd little guys with the big shiny bases...

What he said!! :cwboy:

Chosing between 2D gorgeous leader portrais and units with historical uniforms or 3D generic little toy soldiers is an easy one for me... :siffle:

:) I didn't think there was any actualy information missing. But I will admit the picture is nice.

2D here, the general portraits add to the situational awareness, and help me locate my corps at a glance.

I haven't tried the 3d icons yet to be honest. I'm not opposed to them in any way, I'm just so used to playing with the 2d icons that it just seemed the natural choice to help understand the game better.

I'm glad ageod included the 3d icons however, but as some point I do plan to try them out and I like having the option to do that.

I like both, but tend to use the 3-D more. I remember seeing the first screen of BOA before it was released and to me the portrait counters were a bit jarring. I do agree that that the Leader portaits can make it easier to recognize your forces at a glance. It's all good.

I use 2D. Would it be possible to add a hotkey to change the view in game rather than going out to the menu?

Cheers, Chris

Yes, a hotkey would be great since I like to switch between modes sometimes.

I must say that I started off with the new 3D look but missed the portraits. So - back to 2D within ten minutes of first playing.

But all credit to AGEOD for offering us a choice.

Yes, I agree with Denny's comments 100%. I too started off with the 3D look (the little soldiers look neat!), but the portraits are drawn so well and they add so much to the game map that I switched. But I'm still glad that Ageod gave the choice to the player. Kudos!

My thoughts exactly!

While testing the game I often played with 3D units, just to catch advantages, if any...
But, despite a cool graphical look, I prefer 2D display because of the generals (or unit) specific portraits, a more readable "envelope" for out of command status (in 3D, you have only a very small one at right of the base) and a more accurate unit position with the pin; 3D bases are in this case, IMO, too big and sometimes will overlap in a wrong region (try it if you place the unit near region border).

But the biggest advantage in the 2D/3D system is to let each player choose which display he prefers...

And there almost isn't anything better than having a choice.

I find the 2D icons more useful, but I really don't like the new unit base and it keeps making me switch over to 3D, until I miss the portraits too much.

I am too used to the 2-d image since I own all the other Ageod games. But as others say I do like the idea of choice. I might use 3-D if you could make the leader portraits 3-D! :)

I like 2D. I think they are more elegant. The icons 3D only see them to be useful for Tactical battles. As Imperial Glory, or Total war do it.

I fear it won't be soon, sorry.
Because of the huge task to adjust portraits in 3D mode (several hundreds only for leaders) and also because of the very small sprite you currently have in 3D display.
