What about this game?

I know there is much excitement about NC as reflected in this forum but I am not yet sure if i will by it or not. It is visually very attractive but past that it looks like the AACW engine without the strategic element. Am I wrong?
I spent more time with AACW than any game I have owned since WIP and quite frankly mods are the only thing keeping me interested in AACW as I (after tons and tons of play) have become somewhat jaded with the plain vinella version. So what will NC offer to get me excited again that I don't at this time see, other than it's visual beauty of course? I want to by it but don't want another game that I play for a weekend and then put away like many others I have owned. Thank you.

The Era is why I will be buying the game as it is my favorite. With quite a few campaigns; some of which will be fairly long; I don't think you will be able to play the game during a weekend and set it aside. If you don't already, you should give pbem a try. That is where the nailbiting fun is at.

You'll get a new historical environment, with very detailed OOBs and campaigns. For many this is sufficient, but this is not all.

You get also some new mechanisms & features. Right, you will perhaps not feel the same quantum leap between AACW and NCP compared to what happened between BOA and AACW, but still, take a mn to read the novelties below (in no particular order):

I - Rules of Engagments. ROE are 4 new buttons under the postures of your stack. You can now specify if you want an all-out attack with your stack (no retreat checks for several rounds, losses increased to both side, etc.), or a probe attack, or in defence if you want to fight to the death , retreat if threathened, retreat as soon a shot is fired, etc.

II - New "Napoleonics" themed concepts: Cavalry can now charge in battle (involving a morale check), if it does, will try to cut down weakened or disrupted elements. Opposing Infantries can try to form in square. The Guards units can now commit themselves, in masse, upon the order of some special leaders (Napoleon, Bessieres, Constantin, etc.) and if they do, all your side get a bonus and can litteraly rout the enemy in no time. Except that if they don't, beware the counter-effect you take.

III - 25 new abilities, like Boarding (Nelson), Genius (Wellington and Napoleon), this allow them to 'handle' 10 to 15 abilities, contrary to a max of 4 in AACW. Offensive or Defensive terrain specialist (alter how much troop you can deploy during battle) and more.

IV - Purely cosmetic, but cool anyway: An alternate display, called '3D sprites'. You must have seen then in the screenshots.

V - New special terrains: Mountain Crest and passes, Alpine, major road (functions directionnally, a bit like the railway in ACW, ie you have to enter and follow them from one side of a region to another side). With associated new abilities (mountaineers for example, or even Colonial Leader).

VI - New concept of auto-Garrisoning. Now when you take an important location in NCP, depending of your replacement level, a small garrison will automatically appears, sparing you the burden of splitting one of your brigade for this purpose (less hassle too!). Garrisons eat on your replacements as you can guess, but the rule is optional, so you decide! Also they are themed to the region you have to garrison. Liberate Poland and you will get Polish garrisons eg.

VI - New concept of hardened attrition. Some people want to suffers, we heard them ;) This rule, which is also optional, allow you to 'enjoy' a more realistic attrition rule, where even non moving units can lose soldiers. Also with such a rule, you will need to withdraw troops to depots to get replacements. That will be hard for the French when deep in Mother Russia :king: I advise to use this rule in PBEM by the way.

VII - Historically themed options. A bit like the various options of AACW, but much more powerful and versatile. You can 'buy' replacements or even units, order new supply to be sent from home, postpone the end of the scenario even, get a bonus in forced march in a given area, augment your chance to have your leaders activated, etc. They vary between scenarios for a good part of them, and yes both side get feedbacks about the use of them. These options are in additions to custom made events for each scenario as you can guess.

VIII - TCP/IP utility, for whose who don't want to play by PBEM.

IX - Scorched Earth rule. Active in Russia and to a lower level in Spain. This is a rule benefiting a faction, against all enemy of her. The rule can triggers several things, like some supply burned when you take a region, or the structure destroyed (depot burned, village reduced in level). There is also a chance that the region become pillaged. It has a synergistic effect with the Hardened attrition rule, as it acts also as a magnifier to the losses from attrition.

X - New naval order to intercept adjacent fleet, for a better naval game. Improved Naval AI too.

I forgot points IX and X. And perhaps some others (added now).

The attrition rules will be retroffited, but not before late december I would say. (xmas gift? :) )

...imagine when MC, Jab, Hancock and Stonewall put their hands onto it...the mods :)

Me thinks MC is already modding it in his dreams :)

@Pocus: Excellent the sub-orders idea attached to the stances. A cherry you hadn't told us yet ;)

Curiously, I'm not eager to mod NCP. Not I dislike this game as I'm totally sure it will be a great game with all the yet usual AGEOD qualities and in the same time less strategical and more operational than AACW. That will say much more shorter scenarios, with much more PBEM possibilities, and certainly some modding efforts by some on the scenarios themselves and the Revolutionary period. A great game I will buy ASAP and play.

But, curiously, I'm more fond of Civil War than Napoleonics. I've bought half a van of Civil War books I'm reading. I discover a really great page of mankind History, with its atrocities, dreams, utopias, failures, treasons and sacrifices. A total war waged by great men and asses for solving political, social, moral and religious questions.

On the same time, if Napoleonic time is too very intriguing and full of most of these features, I'm not as interested as I may by the real curious carrier of Grant, by the real military genius of Lee or Forrest, this enigm, by the extraordinary maestria Lincoln showed or the anonymous pains Southerners and Northerners suffered or the ambiguous freedom Blacks got by this war.

Each time I mod this perfect game AACW is, I get this feeling of Great History. As player, NCP will give many satisfactions but it will remain a game. A perfect game. Just a game.

Buy!

November 16th is the current schedule for release. :dada:

We will try to put out a demo before November 16, for the undecided... So you will see if the game can be your cup of tea or not. Contrary to some publishers out there, we prefer to have people buy the game in confidence, and not be disgruntled buyers who regrets their spending. Why?

First because we are confident in our 'products': overall quality, stability and AI level. We are not rushing them, so we do not have to fear player judgment.
Second because disgruntled buyers make disgruntled people who bad mouth the game in various forum if they think they have been robbed, thus creating a ripple effect that can prevent others players to buy the game. Actually we prefer to not have the money of players in this case.
Third, people unsure of their config can test the demo and see if the game run. This save us support time, and time is precious.

For all theses reasons, we do demos. :)

I will buy this game the minute it is released. I love the Napoleonic era. However, with the track record of the magnificent Birth of America and American Civil War, I would buy the next ageod game even if it were entitled Insignificant War of History No. 1 !

This could make a good discussion topic, what would be the most insignificant war declared between 2 countries? Jenkin's Ear War has a good place but I'm sure we can find better!

Pocus:
After reading about the promising new features of NCP i have a little question for you :innocent:

I like very much the "Rules of engagement" concept (it brings memories of playing TOAW a lot of years ago... :p apy :)
I think it gives the player a little control about battles that is very nice without involving micromanagement.
So...
Could we expect that ROE will be retrofitted to AACW and/or BoA/BoA 2.0??? :siffle:

It would be GREAT! :coeurs:

Cheers!

Yes we would like to, now it also implies a bit of graphic adjustment for the current interface, so I can't give you a schedule. For BOA gold, they will be in yes.

Jenkin's Ear War was not insignificant - on the contrary - but it was the flimsiest excuse for going to war - ever.

For most insignificant war I submit the 335-year war
