I know it's wikipedia, but it's something. This is a list of just about every general in the Civil War, North and South, and most of them have short pages available with biographical information.

Gentlemen: these are the books you need.
http://www.amazon.com/Generals-Blue-Lives-Union-Commanders/dp/0807108227/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1382021190&sr=8-1&keywords=generals+in+blue
http://www.amazon.com/Generals-Gray-Lives-Confederate-Commanders/dp/0807108235/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1382021233&sr=8-3&keywords=generals+in+blue
These are the authoritative volumes from LSU Press. They contain a brief bio and a photograph of every General, North and South, in the War. There are a few exceptions, such as officers who were promoted late in the War in the Trans-Mississippi with no confirmation of promotion through Richmond, but virtually everyone is covered. These volumes make for excellent browsing.

I enjoy the challenge of placing generals in historical regions or states if possible. These look like good references that I have been looking for.

I have been using wikipedia but this appears to be more "official" and possibly more informative. Does anyone else have these? If so, what is your opinion of them?

The two Warner books are excellent but if you can afford it, the much more recent Civil War High Commands- http://www.amazon.com/Civil-High-Commands-John-Eicher/dp/0804736413/ref=sr_1_1?s=books&ie=UTF8&qid=1426362000&sr=1-1&keywords=civil+war+high+commands is a great single volume resource that builds on the information found in Generals in Blue/Gray and adds much more

That sounds very interesting and what I may be looking for. As one reviewer states, "Reads like an Officer's Personnel Record, complete with photographs of individuals where available. It is particularly useful in bringing into clear focus the organizational structure, badges of rank and the different departments making up the respective armies."

Like you alluded to, it is not inexpensive. It may however be a valuable source of information to have on hand. It's under consideration.

I will report back if I purchase it. Thank you. :hat:
