The Second Grand Campaign: General discussion

Hi all,

The aim of this project is to again set 6 players in the role of the original actors, to recreate the communication problems when they had to make choices and to give fun for all the community. To see how this went the first time, take a look at http://www.ageod-forum.com/forumdisplay.php?f=187 :)

Grand Campaign project

Scenario: 1862
Players: 6-9 slots (with some extra roles if
Aimed-for progression: 1 turn/week

Union players

Abraham Lincoln
 • Politics, Economy, Reinforcements, Replacements
 • Command US Navy
 • Write the Union AAR
Eastern theater CiC
 • Command Union armies in the eastern theater
 • Write his own AAR
Western theater CiC
 • Command Union armies in the western theater
 • Write his own AAR
Newspaper editor
 • Extra role (provided we have enough players to fill those above)
 • Maintain a newspaper detailing the war as seen from the Union

CSA Players

Jefferson Davis
 • Politics, Economy, Reinforcements, Replacements
 • Command CSA Navy, raiders and partisans
 • Write the CSA AAR forum
Eastern theater CiC
 • Command CSA armies in the eastern theater
 • Write his own AAR
Western theater CiC
 • Command CSA armies in the western theater
 • Write his own AAR
Newspaper editor
 • Extra role (provided we have enough players to fill those above)
 • Maintain a newspaper detailing the war as seen from the CSA

Observer
 • Extra role (provides we have enough players to fill the 6 main slots)
 • Provide neutral commentary and analysis of the game
Notes:
 1. CiC names may vary according to players choices
 2. Theater limits are presidential choices
 3. Players are forbidden to read other players AAR (including their own side)
 4. All communications are to be made in a dedicated public thread created in this forum (no phone, no private mails :niark: ). Some out-of-character coordination before game start will be allowed (to organize things), but after game start, everything must be in-character, in the team's "war room".
 5. Roleplay is compulsory :cwboy:

Procedure:

We'll be using the latest official patch. Any switch to a new patch will be done at the start of a turn, and I'll make sure to say so when it occurs. I.e. for any given turn, all orders and the processing of them will be done with the same patch.
I will do the hosting.
I will create a mailing list for each side, to help in distributing the turn- and order-files.
Orders are submitted by a side when I receive a mail explicitly stating so via the given side's list.

If there are enough people interested, I would also like to try out a few new roles, to help involve those not playing:
 • A "game analyzer" who after each turn receives both sides' turn-files and posts comments on what the teams are doing and how things are going. This requires some experience with the game, if possible with both sides in PBEM :cwboy:
 • A "journalist" on each side, who maintains newspaper. The exact content of the paper would be left to the journalist; it could be reports of events and battles, in-character "interviews" with the players (we'd need to determine how to do those, though ;) ) and suchlike.

Obviously, long term commitment is crucial to take part in this campaign.

Applications are open NOW! (Apply in this thread) :dada:

Please consider my humble request for either theatre as Union CiC.

I'll maintain an updated list the positions people are interested in, like this:

Union
President: Jabberwock
CiC East: Jabberwock, johnnycai
CiC West: Jabberwock, johnnycai
Journalist:

CSA
President: Jabberwock
CiC East: Jabberwock
CiC West: Jabberwock
Journalist:

Unaffiliated
Observer:

Once we get a fair number of participants, we'll start filling the positions themselves :)

The neutral observer position, commenting the running of the war, is a great idea which will help greatly the audience in its understanding of the strategic issues faced by the GC players.

I am intrigued by the concept. How much time, on average, do you think a theater commander would have to invest per week?

Count me in boys....love the game. I wanted to get involved with the last one. I don't care what part I play at all either.

I'd consider myself an experienced player.

Look forward to taking the project on.

It's a bit hard to say, but I'd say it hinges on three things:
 • Gameplay (how much time you take in placing the orders and suchlike)
 • Discussions in the war room (last time, the Union usually had a couple of posts per player per turn, with the president usually posting more than a CiC)
 • AAR (which depends on how much you put into it)
All in all, I'd say that 2-3 hours a week/turn might be a good rule of thumb, but since this is very much a guesstimate, others are free to correct me :cwboy:

A question -
Will the special house rules be redone? I believe the originals were designed with 1.04 in mind.

Posted: Thu Mar 27, 2008 11:14 pm
by Rafiki
Actually, when the original house rules were set, we were looking at patch 1.02, perhaps even 1.01, IIRC ;)

But to answer your question; yes, house rules will be revised. Teams will get to have their say and final list will be set by yours truly based on the discussion :)

Why do you need 6 AARs?

To speed play, wouldn't it be enough if just the president did an AAR for his side, while the theatre commanders concentrated on making orders?

Posted: Fri Mar 28, 2008 1:57 am
by Jabberwock
If one AAR were merely posting actions and results with an occasional screenshot, that would be sufficient. These AARs include roleplay, varying intelligence estimates, divergent priorities and skills, and other friction along the command chain.

That's why I am hesitant to participate. Communicating with the other players to get what you need AND doing an AAR detailing everything I am thinking about for each turn becomes a part time job very quickly.

Part of the motivation for this is to see how having to communicate orders and requests for reinforcements and suchlike, rather than simply doing everything yourself, works out. The individual AARs, in addition to the usual things you get from an AAR, provide a way for each player to say what they *really* think and what they *really* are trying to do.

I think you are exaggerating the time needs a bit. The "burden" is fairly comparable to if you are running a one-player-a-side PBEM with an accompanying AAR, since you spend some more time doing communications, but less time placing orders and chronicling your moves, since you are only responsible for part of what your side is doing. It is (of course) up to each player how much time and detail he wants to put into the AAR, just like with any other AAR.

I have been anxiously waiting for the next 'Grand Campaign' to get started!

I would love to be the CSA Western CiC. As far as the AAR's, will each role have a separate thread to post theirs in?

Looking forward to it!

Yes; take a look at the previous Grand Campaign to see how it worked out.

Each player's AAR is (for obvious reasons) off-limits to the other players ;)

I would be interested in one of the CiC roles for either side. Prefer Union if available.

I would like to announce an official change of heart....I'd prefer to run the CiC for Either North of South in the EASTERN theatre. SORRY...and if it CAN'T happen...that's ok.

Just being honest about the preference....;P

Andrew asked for a CiC role. If he meant a theater CiC, then I see it shaping up like this:

USA
President: Jabberwock
CiC East: johnnycai/AndrewKurtz
CiC West: johnnycai/AndrewKurtz

I've simplified to try and show "filled" roles, therefore ignoring some possible combinations. No offense intended to anyone.

Indeed; mixed up the roles a bit (and probably connected Andrew with his presidential pre-history ;) )

For now, we're just trying to see who might be interested and which roles they might be interested in filling. When push comes to shove, some roles will probably give themselves, while others might need some discussions and sorting out before they become ready :)

To clarify:

CiC East: johnnycai, Banks6060, AndrewKurtz
CiC West: johnnycai, AndrewKurtz

Will we be allowed to read our own side's newspapers (journalist's account), but not the observer's AAR or the other sides newspapers? Or is there a different plan?

Newspapers are public, so both sides get to read both newspapers. The oberserver's observations are off-limits to the players and journalists.

After looking carefully at the scenario setup, I'd prefer to play Abe over Jeff. I just don't understand how the rebs got in that position, either militarily or economically. :bonk: :tournepas :sourcil:
