Defensive power too low?

Hi all

I ve found in my games both PBEM & Athena´s than defensive power is not as high as seemed to me, by reading all those posts.

Loses are always similar in both sides, the only situation I ve had disastrous results is when using the FULL attack / defense (don´t retire)...

this is:
When attacking 1,5 - 1 or 2-1 against a good defensive force ... i e no CP penalty, entrenched 4+, sharpshooters & arty as normal... results are:
Loses equivalent, and defender retreats most of the times, either winning or not. Another result is retreating before battle, abandoning 8 level trenches just firing a few shots (mostly artillery?).

When attack is 1-1 the loses are also similar, but attacker retreats ....

Im not sure if i´m wrong, but the only really really bad results (i.e lots of men lost in attacker army) is when the attack is odds 1-1,5 / 1-2 and the attacking leader is really bad, can not retreat...

Very strange, I am experiencing the exact opposite, I've got my army in Northern Virginia dug in WW1-style, behind rivers and so far I am bloodily beating back any and all Union advances on my position being outnumbered 2:1, with 3:1 casualties (in my advantage) or better results (the results getting better as I get less outnumnered).

I think it's not the number of units, but their power that matters (all my guys are drilled, dug in and have plenty of artillery, on favourable ground, behind a river, with decent leaders).
