Disappearing Irregulars

This must sound like another dumb question (let's face it, it probably is) ... but nevertheless, I am stumped.
On two occasions now I have sent out one or two irregular regiments into some broken ground region to lay an ambush etc. Both times they just disappeared without leaving a trace. I read the turn review carefully each time and since I host my only PBEM game, I also see the turn animation. I never saw them go - they were not engaged in battle, there was no message about their fate, they just vanished into thin air. It's almost mystical.
Any ideas as to what may have happened to my boys would be really appreciated.

What is the season? Were they supplied?

Thank you, kind sirs. It happened on the first turn of a Cornwallis 1781 scenario where I sent some boys over the mountains, and also on the first turn of a Saratoga scenario where I put the irregular battalion in Ticonderoga into the immediately adjoining region north to lay an ambush.
They were supplied, I understand, when they set out. They had no leader with them, though. And they disappeared without a trace--no hint on the turn event list.

have you checked the forces listing to be sure they are not somewhere?

I have. I have also just done it again, just to be sure. But I also circle through all my armies each turn, using the "E" key. So I am confident I'd have found them if they were still there.

That only works if they have no orders. I have accidentally ordered units across the whole map, and they won't show up on the "r" scan until they get there, which could be months later.

Would the saved files from the games in question be of any use? I still have them. (But don't laugh about my feeble attempts ... I have just started playing this, 4 short games, that's all.

)

you have to use ctrl r to not skip units which are moving, list of keys:

if you zip the whole saved game, yes it will help because they keep the 12 previous turn as history. (and you can revert back to a previous turn by the way)

Gentlemen, it appears I may have wasted your time. My apologies. I restored the first turn in the second of the games I mentioned, and I did not quite find the orders the way I remembered having given them. I may have ordered the entire army out, by accident, instead of a single unit, hence said unit wouldn't have been mentioned in the turn report ... and was probably rather eliminated in the battle in which the army itself was whipped.
I am sorry, I shall be more careful to check the facts next time.

We are not fail-proof ourselves and it could have been a real point...players did find some in this way, so we are always pleased and concerned to listen...thanks
